Missing Tristan…
February 29, 2012
I was supposed to be in Birmingham this Saturday, to hear Andris Nelsons conduct Tristan und Isolde. Not all that sadly, I’m in New York instead on a rather fraught weekend jaunt. On Sunday, I’ll hear the Vienna Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall playing the works of various Strausses. If only Lorin Maazel weren’t conducting…. And on Tuesday Maurizio Pollini plays Chopin and Liszt at the Southbank.
Meanwhile, here’s the conclusion of the act two love duet from Tristan, in apology. Edwin McArthur conducts Lauritz Melchior and Kirsten Flagstad in 1939. On the first half of the video, Flagstad sings Brangäne as well as Isolde.
